Tips for Choosing the Right Trailer Hire for Your Next Project

Whether you're taking items to a local junkyard or just need to move something from your home to someone else's, a trailer hire can make the job easier overall. You may not need to hire a removalist when you choose a trailer you can haul yourself, and they can make it much easier to dispose of heavy and bulky objects without damaging the bed of your truck or inside of a van. Note a few quick tips for choosing the right trailer hire for your next project.

1. Towing weight

When hiring a trailer, talk to the rental agency about what you'll be hauling if it's especially heavy. This would include any oversized pieces of furniture including TV cabinets, sofas, and the like. You need to know the towing capacity of the trailer so that it doesn't get bogged down from being overloaded and run the risk of actually having an axle break, or of one end bumping and scraping the roadway.

You also need to note the towing capacity of your vehicle; this would mean the trailer itself as well as what you're towing, once the trailer is fully loaded. The rental agency can help you estimate this weight and then you can check if your own vehicle can tow it safely. If not, you may need to get a lighter trailer and then actually make more than one trip to your destination.

2. Sides and covering

Note that plain trailers won't have any sides or covering, whereas a caged trailer will have sides and a furniture mover will be fully enclosed. You want to consider your choices carefully; the fully enclosed or caged trailer will offer more protection from your items being damaged by the elements or from gravel and other debris when on the road. However, it might be more difficult to load heavier objects into a caged or fully enclosed trailer if they don't come with a ramp. Items you're taking to a junkyard may also not need to be protected, so don't overspend on features you don't need but be sure to protect your items with a cage or enclosure when necessary.

3. Vehicle carrier

You might note that some trailers are designated as being for vehicles, including a motorcycle or ATV. It's vital that you choose these trailers in particular if this is what you're hauling. They will have the proper tie-downs to keep something on wheels secure when in the trailer and may also have attached ramps for easier loading and unloading. You don't want to get a standard trailer home and then try to use a homemade ramp to load even a motorcycle, as it may very well collapse under you and damage your vehicle and the trailer itself.
